Magnolia Unconference 2017: the roundup

Published on June 29, 2017 by Rebekkah Laeuchli

The new Magnolia community event for developers kicked off June 21 at the Magnolia headquarters in Basel, Switzerland. A day of discussion and debate was followed by two days of workshops, with a party in between for networking and enjoying Swiss barbecue. If you couldn't be there yourself, then get a taste of the Magnolia Unconference with this quick report and we hope to see you next year!

As developers and partners arrive at the Magnolia building in one of Basel's trendy industrial areas, they're greeted with coffee, pastries, and of course, a swag bag.

Time to have a seat for a brief welcome to kick off the Unconference.

Attendees are invited to pitch topics for the day's sessions. The topics are then voted on and arranged into a highly formal and official-looking schedule.

Product managers Antti Hietala and Topher Zimmermann take the crowd through a review of what's been happening this year (cool projects from partners! component sharing contest!) and what's on the roadmap for the future (tags! the Stories app!). CTO Jan Haderka also takes the mike to cover the technology vision for Magnolia.

The sessions begin! Unconfers split into groups to discuss performance optimization, code sharing between projects, Magnolia NOW, and much much more.

Definitely time for some pasta and a break before the afternoon sessions.

We're off again...plenty of topics still to cover! We live-streamed "Collect ideas for smart search bar using machine learning" on both Facebook and Twitter.

Our coffee machine was kept busy the whole day and there were plenty of treats on offer for those with a sweet tooth.

Last round of topics! Content types, anyone? REST?

The Unconference day draws to a close, but the evening is just beginning. Music, conviviality, and...arm wrestling continue till the wee hours of the morning.

The workshops begin with coffee (of course!) and pain au chocolat. Attendees then spend the next two days covering content personalization and optimization, advanced front-end development, high-performance architectures with Magnolia, and other workshop topics.

Thank you to all who attended the first Magnolia Unconference and made it such a special event! To view the rest of the photos, please click on over to our Flickr album. You can find the notes from the Unconference sessions on the Magnolia Wiki.
